MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- - The women's tennis team swept Memphis in Conference USA match played at Rhodes College, Saturday and did not drop a set. Southern Miss, which improved to 8-1 on the season and 1-1 in league play, won all three doubles matches and swept all six singles matches in straight sets in the win, while Memphis dropped to 1-7 and 0-3. "I was really happy with the way the players stepped up today," Head Coach Randy Rowley said. "We kept Brittany out of singles, and they all stepped up and came alive. I was pleased with the intensity we had." The Golden Eagles opened the match with 1-0, winning the doubles points. Ali Blackett and Grace Kammerer defeated Amanda Brown and Flavia Russo (UM), 8-1, at No. 3 doubles. Stephanie Dellocono and Lauren Gutterman defeated Ekin Zafir and Christina Wieser (UM), 8-2, at No. 2 doubles. Rounding out the doubles competition were Sherry Price and Brittany Serret defeating Marjorie Ondeck and Dara Toulch (UM), 8-4, at No. 1 doubles. Southern Miss carried its momentum into the singles play. Blackett blanked Toulch, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2 singles, giving the Lady Eagles 2-0 advantage. Dellocono followed with a 6-0, 6-1, win at No. 3 singles over Zafir. Gutterman clinched the match at No. 4 singles with her 6-2, 6-0, win over Brown. Price finished off Ondeck at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-1, while Kammerer outlasted Wieser at No. 5 singles, 6-4, 6-3. Natalia Parrado completed the sweep for Southern Miss, 6-2, 7-5 at No. 6 singles.
Southern Miss returns to action on Sunday, taking on Houston at 11 a.m., in Memphis. |
