“We were brilliant today,” Southern Miss Head Coach Gail Macklin said. “We out-shot them, but the balls didn’t go into the net. That’s been our season. If we keep playing like we are, it will pay off. We battled hard and we were a better team on today, but that’s soccer. It’s heartbreaking.”
In the first period, Meghan McCallion put the Pirates ahead on an unassisted goal, at the 30:04 mark.
The Lady Eagles finished the first period with a 5-2 edge in shots.
In the second half, Southern Miss had an opportunity at the 50:11 mark, as Kalee Silovsky shot to the left side of the net, but Amber Cambell saved the goal. Two minutes later, Carly Barkley had an opportunity, but her shot was also saved by Cambell.
The Lady Eagles had another golden opportunity at the 70:36 mark, as Sara McFadden’s shot was saved by Cambell at close range and a shot by Barkley was also saved by Cambell close to the net at the 70:44 mark.
At the 86:49 mark, McFadden netted her fifth goal of the season, off an assist from Barkley, to knot the game at 1-1, which was the score as regulation ended.
“McFadden’s goal was a culmination of the hard work we had already done,” Macklin said. “We were just waiting for it to go in. I don’t know how we didn’t score sooner.”
Southern Miss had a 9-3 edge in shots in the second period.
In the first overtime session, Southern Miss had a 3-1 advantage in shots, but a shot by Kim Turner was saved by Cambell and two Carly Barkley shots went wide.

“The team needs to keep their heads up,” Macklin said. “We’ve got four games left and they’re all winnable. We’re going to go at them like we always do. We just hope our luck will change.”
At halftime, Blake Nettles, who passed away during Hurricane Katrina, was honored. Nettles was a coach in the Hattiesburg Youth Soccer Association. A framed, autographed jersey was presented to his family.
