HATTIESBURG, Miss.— The Southern Miss Lady Eagle soccer team won its Conference USA home opener Friday, defeating Marshall 3-0.

With the win, Southern Miss improves to 4-5-1 overall, 1-3 in Conference USA, also snapping a five match losing streak. Marshall falls to 1-12, 0-5.

“You’re always happy to get a win,” Southern Miss Head Soccer Coach Gail Macklin said. “It’s good for us, because we out-shot them 13-1. It sums up the way we’ve been playing. We’ve had plenty of opportunities and our shots went in today. We were also excited to be home. It was huge to be at home. We played very well today.”

Friday marked the first home match for the Lady Eagles since they opened their season against Louisiana-Lafayette on Aug. 26. The team had been on a eight consecutive match road stretch, before returning home today.

Junior Kim Turner scored the first goal of the game for Southern Miss, at the 6:54 mark, getting an assist from Sara McFadden, the first of her career. It was Turner’s fifth goal of the season.

Junior Sarah Brennan netted her third this season off an assist from Turner at the 33:28 mark, giving the Lady Eagles a 2-0 advantage at the intermission.

Southern Miss out-shot Marshall 7-0 in the first period of play.

In the second half, Sarah McFadden netted her fourth goal of the season off an assist from Carly Barkley at the 45:30 mark, to make the final margin.

“McFadden’s goal early in the second half was a big key for us,” Macklin said. “It set the tone for the rest of the game.”

The Lady Eagles finished with a 13-1 advantage in shots. McFadden finished with a game-high four shots, while Barkley added two. Freshman Holly Cox had one save on the day for Southern Miss.

“We had a hard look at ourselves on how we were conceding goals,” Macklin said. “We worked hard on that. It’s a credit to the girls, because they knew what they had to do, and got it done today.”

Macklin said she was very pleased with the play of Kalee Silovsky, Katie McClary and McFadden today.

Southern Miss returns to action on Sunday, facing East Carolina in a 12 p.m., contest at the Marshall Bell Track and Soccer Complex.
