Final Stats

Hattiesburg, Miss. - The Southern Miss Lady Eagle soccer team lost its match-up with Conference USA rival Memphis, 4-1, today at the Southern Miss Track & Field and Soccer Complex.

With the loss, Southern Miss falls to 4-8-1 overall and 0-4 in conference play while Memphis improves to 6-4-1, 2-0-1.

"During the first half, it was a game of missed opportunities for us," said Head Coach Gail Macklin. "We had five clear-cut chances on goal and didn't convert. When you play a good team like Memphis, they take their opportunities."

Within the first three minutes of the game, the Lady Eagles charged the net bringing three missed opportunities by senior forwards Kim Turner and Sarah Brennan.

Memphis' first goal came when Kylie Hayes beat sophomore goalie Christina Duvall at the 14:15 mark of the first period.

The teams entered halftime with Memphis leading 2-1 after Nicky McLeod netted her second goal of the 2006 season.

During the second half of play, Memphis went up 3-0 before Southern Miss senior Carly Barkley scored on a penalty kick, making it her fifth goal of the season and bringing the score to 3-1.

With less than a minute to play in the second half, Memphis' Maiko Higashiyama netted the Tigers' fourth and final goal of the game.

"We were a victim of ourselves today," added Macklin. "I thought we fought hard and we never gave up. We got our late goal and that was positive because we haven't scored in a couple of games. We had some great performances by Sarah McFadden up front and in the mid-field and Christina Duvall was excellent in goal."

Turner led the Lady Eagles in shots with 4 while Barkley recorded 3.

The team returns to action on Oct. 13 as they travel to Huntington, W.Va. to take on Marshall. Their next home match is scheduled for Oct. 21 against UCF.
