Lady Eagles Snap a Five-Game Losing Streak

Emer Foley continues to roll for the Lady Eagles, scoring 22 points and grabbing a career-high 16 rebounds

NEW ORLEANS – Southern Miss snapped a five-game losing streak, defeating New Orleans, 73-53, in non-conference action on Tuesday in the Lakefront Arena.  The Lady Eagles improved to 7-14 while UNO falls to 1-18.

Emer Foley led the team in scoring with a game-high 22 points and pulled down a career-high 16 rebounds.  Shannon Stueber scored 12 points and Dianca Jones chipped in 10 points.  Joevone Markey led UNO with 14 points and 10 rebounds, with Le’Della English scoring 13 and Andrea Williams added 11 points.

“This was a big plus for us,” Head Coach Joye Lee-McNelis said.  “I told our team we had to take advantage of opportunities and I believe we did that tonight.  This gives us some confidence heading into the weekend against Tulane.”

Southern Miss improved on its shooting percentage, shooting 46.2 percent in the second half and finished the game with a season low 15 turnovers.

“Emer has really stepped up in our last three games,” McNelis said.  “She has developed some confidence and it shows in her game.  I feel a little nervous when she is not in the game.”

Neither team shot well from the field, Southern Miss shot 30 percent while UNO shot better at 38 percent in the first half.  The Lady Eagles had only seven turnovers in the first 20 minutes of play.  Foley continued to dominate the scoring and rebounding for the Lady Eagles, tallying 12 points and grabbing eight rebounds in the first half.

Southern Miss returns to Conference USA play against Tulane on Saturday at 5 p.m.
