Lady Eagles Lose At Marquette, 76-54

MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- Southern Miss' basketball Lady Eagles found a second-straight strong road opponent waiting at Marquette today, and the combination of the road and a strong opponent resulted in a 76-54 loss to Marquette, in a game played at the Al McGuire Center.

The loss drops Southern Miss to 13-5 overall, 1-4 in C-USA, while Marquette improved to 15-4 overall, 5-1 in the league. The loss also was the fourth straight for Southern Miss, but the Lady Eagles now return to the friendly confines of Green Coliseum for a pair of games, Jan. 31, against Saint Louis and Feb. 2, against Memphis.

Marquette scored the game's first eight points and never trailed in today's game. That early lead grew to as many as 18 points in the first half, before Head Coach Rick Reeves' team cut into the deficit and got back to within 10 points, 38-28, at halftime.

Southern Miss continued that run and got as close as seven points, 41-34, with 17:43 remaining in the game, only to see Marquette score the next eight points to blunt the Lady Eagle charge. That 49-34 lead again continued to grow, reaching as many as 22 points twice in the time remaining, including the final score.

"I thought the combination of us being something of a young team, still being somewhat tired and sore from Friday's game and us playing on the road against some of the better teams in Conference USA caught up with us this weekend," said Reeves. "But we now return home, where we need to regroup and find a way to get back in the win column."

Marquette shot .510 (26-51) for the game and put three players in double figures. Danielle Kamm, Carolyn Kieger and Kelly Schwerman had 13 points each to lead the winners. Southern Miss also got double-figure scoring numbers from three players, led by Denise Wilson's 14. Tierra Lassiter added 11 and Lana Lewis 10 for the Lady Eagles, who hit only 20-of-53 (.377) field goals in the game.

Southern Miss also hit 5-of-13 three-point baskets and 9-of-13 from the free throw line, and got a game-high six rebounds from Wilson, though Southern Miss trailed in that department, 35-30.
