Tulane's Teana McKiver led all scorers with 33 points, Gwen Slaughter had 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Joseph scored 13 points. Southern Miss trailed by as many as 10 points, 54-44, with 7:57 remaining in the game, when the Golden Eagles started their comeback effort. Southern Miss used a 21-12 run over seven minutes to tie the game at 66-66 off a Sonja Brown layup with 27 seconds remaining. Sumerall then fouled Kelly Nadeau at mid-court attempting to steal the basketball. Nadeau made one-of-two free throws, giving the Green Wave the one-point lead, 67-66. With no timeouts, the Lady Eagles went the length of the court, and once again, Sumerall hit a 10-footer that what would have been a game-winner with 10 seconds left. After a Tulane timeout, Joseph launched a three-point shot that hit off the side of the rim, but grabbed the rebound and put it back just as time expired to give the Green Wave the win.
"I am proud of the way we fought back late in the game," Head Coach Rick Reeves said. "We are still a young team, and we are improving every day. I thought we showed a lot of heart today. I have to give Tulane credit, they played a great game today. They are a well-coached team." Tulane took a 32-26 lead into halftime behind McKiver's 12 points. The Lady Eagles had 11 turnovers in the half, while shooting 28.6 percent. Southern Miss held the rebounding edge, 49-47. The Golden Eagles finished the game shooting 36.0 percent from the field and connected on seven, three-pointers. Tulane was 0-of-10 from three-point range. Southern Miss continues Conference USA play with a weekend series at Saint Louis, Jan. 11, and Memphis, Jan. 13.
