Veteran Eagle Tennis Players Advance With Wins

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Southern Miss men’s tennis team competed in the Beau Holton Memorial Men’s Tennis Invitational at the Goldring Tennis Stadium, Friday.

 

Senior Juanjo Martin won both his matches, defeating Brandon Nicholson of LSU, 6-3, 6-2, and followed with a 6-3, 6-0, victory against Patirizio Maucci of Tulane to advance to the quarterfinals.  Martin will face Nicolas Houard of UNO at 10 a.m.

 

Junior David Canudas battled over three hours before defeating Andreas Siljestrom of Middle Tennessee in three sets, 6-7, 7-5, 6-4.  He will play David Goulet of Tulane, also at 10 a.m.

 

Christopher Rea defeated Felipe Lima of Belmont, 6-4, 6-4, but lost to Cory Ross of LSU, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

 

Mark Lux lost to Max Lacroix of Tulane, 6-3, 6-3, and Danny Bryan of LSU, 7-6, 6-4.  Thomas Funke lost to Hannu Piiroinen of Tulane, 6-1, 6-1, and Rishan Kuruppu of Middle Tennessee, 6-1, 6-0.

 

Reid Bourgeois dropped his opening match to Amant Sitaram of Middle Tennessee, 7-6, 6-4.  Bourgeois advanced in the consolation bracket, defeating Saif Ali of UNO by default and will play Matt Fitzpatrick of Belmont at 9 a.m.

 

In other action, Dylan Mezey lost to Brandon Allen of Middle Tennessee, 6-4, 6-2, dropping into the consolation draw to face Danny Bryan of LSU, also at 9 a.m.
