Southern Miss Men’s Tennis Team Finishes Competition At Crimson Tide Fall Tournament
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Golden Eagles had a productive weekend in Tuscaloosa, Ala. at the Crimson Tide Fall Tournament, most notably by Dylan Mezey, who won the Men’s Open Singles – C Consolation West Draw.
In singles competition, Domagoj Anic lost to Javier Bes (Alabama), 6-4, 6-2, in the opening round of the Open Singles - A East Draw. He would then face Monte Tucker (Illinois) in the A Consolation West Draw, losing 6-4, 6-1. He finished his singles competition with a match against Jan Zelezny (Colorado), losing 6-1, 7-6 (2) in the quarterfinals A Consolation South Draw. Also in the Open Singles - A East Draw, Marc Lux was defeated in the opening round by Alex Cojanu (William & Mary), 7-5, 6-0. In the A Consolation West Draw, he was defeated by Sam Chang (FSU), 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (5), and by Billy Mertz (Alabama), 7-6 (4), 6-4, in the quarterfinals of the A Consolation South Draw, wrapping up his singles competition for the weekend.
In the Open Singles - B East Draw, Reid Bourgeois was defeated by Jose-Carlos Pinto (Miss. State), 6-2, 6-1 in the opening round. He then defeated Scott Robertson (Jacksonville State), 6-4, 6-3, in the first round of the B Consolation West Draw, advancing to the quarterfinals where he lost Stephen Ward (William & Mary), 6-0, 6-0. Juan Garzon also competed in the Open Singles - B East Draw, losing in the opening round to Mark Gellard (South Alabama), 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (8). In the B Consolation West Draw, he defeated Jean Vaccarin (Jacksonville State), 6-0, 6-0, advancing to the quarterfinals where he lost to Chad Tsuda (Colorado), 6-1, 6-7 (9), 1-0 (8).
In the Open Singles – C East Draw, John Koti defeated Charlie Yemm (Colorado), 6-3, 6-0 in the opening round and would advance to the next round where he faced Johnny Griffee (Samford), losing 6-3, 6-2. In the quarterfinals of the Singles – C Consolation North Draw, he defeated Taylor Striplin (Alabama), 6-7 (6), 6-0, 1-0 (6). Dylan Mezey also competed in the Open Singles – C East Draw, where after losing the opening round to Hanns Spangenberg (UAB), 6-4, 6-2, he wouldn’t lose again in singles competition for the rest of the weekend. In the first round of the Singles – C Consolation West Draw, he defeated Josh Irey (Miss. State), 6-1, 6-2, advancing to the quarterfinals where he won, 6-4, 6-2, against Eric Stephens (Samford). In the semifinals he defeated Peter Zimmer (Arizona), 5-7, 7-6 (6), 1-0 (4), earning him a trip to the finals where he defeated Andrew Felsenthal (Alabama), 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (5), winning the Singles – C Consolation West Draw.
In doubles play, Anic/Lux lost to Blackmon/Rath (Ga. Tech), 8-6 in the opening round of the Open Doubles – A. In the Open Doubles – A Consolation, they lost to Girod/Pinto (Miss. State), 8-3.
In the Open Doubles – B, Bourgeois/Garzon defeated Ray/Walsh (Birmingham Southern) in the opening round, 8-4. In the next round, they were defeated by Dvorak/Zelezny (Colorado), 8-6. Koti/Mezey were also in the Open Doubles – B, losing to Silveira/Weaver (Samford), 8-1. In the Open Doubles – B Consolation, they defeated Crockett/Mabry (Birmingham Southern) in the quarterfinals, 8-4.
In 1 on 1 Doubles – A, Lux defeated Phillippe Frayssinoux (Miss. State) in the opening round, 8-3, advancing immediately to the semifinals when his matchup in the quarterfinals with Chad Tsuda (Colorado) could not be played due to an injury by Tsuda. In the semifinals, he was defeated by Marko Rajivec (Ga. Tech), 8-4.
In 1 on 1 Doubles – B, Anic lost to Jarret Chirico (Virginia), 8-2. Bourgeois also competed in 1 on 1 Doubles – B, losing to Ryan Farlow (Miss. State), 8-5.
