Jan. 29, 2007 HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss men's tennis team held its home opener today at the Hattiesburg Country Club, resulting in a 7-0 win over Southern University. "It was a good win," Head Coach Teddy Viator said. "We played six freshmen. We're going to have to step it up for our next match against UNLV, who is nationally ranked." In singles play, Andrew Poole played No. 1 for Southern Miss, defeating Marlon Gichie, 7-5, 6-0, while Domagoj Anic played No. 2, recording a win against Bino Rasedisa, 7-5, 6-1. Playing No. 3 for the Golden Eagles, Diego Machuca finished with a win over Ork Maton, 6-0, 7-6, 11-9, and Oscar Machuca defeated Elvis Espinal, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 4 spot. Markus Wessinghage recorded a win over Ian Alece, 6-3, 6-1, playing No. 5, and Wren Hood defeated Kashwane Nelson, 6-4, 7-5, at No. 6. In doubles action, Strate Krestski paired up with Wessinghage to play No. 1 for the Golden Eagles, finishing with an 8-3 victory over Gichie and Nelson. Playing No. 2 doubles, D. Machuca and O. Machuca defeated Rasedisa and Maton, 8-1. Anic and Poole played No. 3 doubles for Southern Miss, tallying an 8-2 win over Espinal and Alece. The Golden Eagles are set to travel to Las Vegas on Wednesday, where they will compete in the UNLV invitational, beginning Friday, Feb. 2.
