HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss men's golf team opened the fall portion of its 2006-07 slate Monday by shooting a 36-hole team score of 623, finishing 47 strokes over par during the first day of the Scenic City Invitational held at the Honors Course in Ooltewah, Tenn. The Golden Eagles as a team were tied for 14th in the 17 team field.

Senior Joel Myrick (Hattiesburg, Miss.) paced Southern Miss by placing tied for 18th after shooting 75 in both rounds to finish with a plus-six, 150. Junior Kyle Ramey (Paducah, Ky.) was next with a plus-11 score of 155, firing a 79 and 76 to hold a 49th-place tie in the competition.

Freshman Paul Apyan (Chattanooga, Tenn.) fired an 80 and a 77 to complete the day at 157, 13-over-par, while sophomore Rocky Cleland (Hattiesburg, Miss.) posted rounds of 82 and 83 to finish at 165 (plus-21) to hold down an 85th place tie. Freshman Tyler Sparks (Belmont, Miss.) completed the scoring for the Golden Eagles with rounds of 88 and 79 to tally a 167 (plus-23) and finish in 87th place.

The second round was suspended due to darkness with 15 players left on the course and play will resume at 7 a.m. CT Tuesday with the completion of the second round, followed by the final 18 holes of the tournament.

Callum Macauley of Ole Miss leads the individuals after 36 holes with a four-under 140, while Charlotte and Middle Tennessee held down the team lead at plus-15, with the 49ers still with golfers left on the links as played was halted.

Southern Miss posted team rounds of 316 and 307 and are tied with Francis Marion after the first day of the event.
