Day One Results In PDF Format
April 24, 2006 WEST POINT, Miss. - The Southern Miss men's golf team opened with a first-round score of 292 (4-over par) and currently stands ninth following opening-day play at the 2006 Conference USA Men's Golf Championship at the par 72, 7,000-yard Old Waverly Golf Club here in West Point, Miss. The University of Memphis had a team score of 276 (12-under) to hold the clubhouse lead over SMU, which finished with a score of 278 (10-under) in their inaugural C-USA tournament. Tulsa and Houston are tied for third with scores of 285 (3-under), while Rice and UAB are both tied for fifth with 2-under scores of 286. Justin Elliott and Joel Myrick each paced host Southern Miss with first-round scores of even-par 72, tying for 20th each. Jason Cuthbertson and Kyle Ramey each stand tied for 31st with identical scores of 74. Danny Dennis rounded out the team scoring with a 75, tying for 39th. Memphis' Kevin Fortin-Simard and SMU's Colt Knost each shot first-round scores of 66 (6-under) to lead all individuals. The Tiger's Brad Benjamin is one shot back in third place after firing a five-under, 67. Houston's Kevin Newman is fourth with a 4-under 68, and six players are tied for fifth with rounds of 69.
UCF was the only other team to shoot even par or better, posting a 288 (E) to stand in seventh place. UTEP was in eighth with a 291 (+3), and East Carolina is 10th after a 296 (+8), Marshall is 11th with a 302 (+14) and Tulane rounded out the 12-team field with a 308 (+20). The second round of the tournament begins at 8 a.m., on Tuesday.
