March 27, 2006 SPRINGFIELD, La. - The Southern Miss men's golf team shot an opening day total of 611 (316-295) to rank fifth overall at the Carter Plantation Intercollegiate at the Carter Plantation Golf Club, Monday. Host Southeastern Louisiana holds the first round lead with its overall total of 600 (297-303), while Mississippi State is second with a 604 (298-306). Jacksonville State (293-313--606) and South Alabama (306-301--607) precede the Golden Eagles in the top five. Three Golden Eagles posted top 20 scores on the day, led by Joel Myrick who ranks tied for 12th with a 77-74--151. Justin Elliott and Jason Cuthbertson both are tied for 14th with mirror scores of 80-72--152. Kyle Ramey (79-78--157) and Danny Dennis (85-77--162) are tied for 34th and 47th, overall. Jacksonville State's Julian Colmenares is the current leader with a 69-76--145, while Matthew Carvell of Southeastern Louisiana is second with a 72-75--147. USF's Tyler Hitchcock (76-72--148) and Jacksonville State's Daniel Willett (70-78--148) are each tied for third, and SELU's Hugo Leon (72-77--149) is fifth. The final day of the tournament is set for Tuesday with tee times beginning at 7:30 a.m.
