HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Junior Kyle Ramey (Paducah, Ky.) fired a 69 while freshmen Paul Apyan (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and Wes Carter (Hoover, Ala.) each added a 70 to lead Southern Miss in the final day of the ASU Indian Classic to help give the Golden Eagles a ninth-place finish at the 54-hole, par-72 tournament, Tuesday, at the 6,903-yard Sage Meadows Golf Club. Ramey, who was competing as an individual and not as part of the team, captured a fifth-place tie after putting up his lowest round of the season of 69 to end the event with a 212 stroke total. Apyan ended his tournament with two rounds of 70 to catapult him to a 15th-place tie with a 215, while Carter finished tied for 35th after his 70 allowed him to finish with a 219. Sophomore Rocky Cleland (Hattiesburg, Miss.) suffered through a 78 in his final round to fall into a 42nd-place tie at 220, while freshman Alex Park (Ithaca, N.Y.) shot a 79 to end his 54-hole tournament at 225 and a 64th-place tie. Senior Joel Myrick (Hattiesburg, Miss.) rounded out the Golden Eagle finishers with a 76 over his final circuit for a 228 stroke total and a 71st-place tie. The Golden Eagles which shot their lowest round as a team in the second round yesterday (287) and tied their second-best round (288) in 2006-07 during the opening circuit, recorded a 294 score over the final 18 holes to finish at 869. The total score is the lowest 54-hole total for the team this season. USF captured the team title with an overall score of 852, beating New Orleans (854) by two strokes. UL Lafayette came in third (857), followed by Troy (862), Louisiana Tech (864), Missouri State (865), Jacksonville State and Illinois State (866), Southern Miss, Austin Peay (874), Central Arkansas (877), host Arkansas State (879), Northern Iowa (880), Arkansas-Little Rock (883), Louisiana-Monroe (901) and Southern Illinois (914).
Erik Barnes of Austin Peay accumulated a 10-under-par 206, including a 70 in the final round, to capture the individual medalist honor. The Golden Eagles complete the regular season April 29 through May 1 when they travel to Texarkana, Ark., for the Conference USA championship.
