Basketball Falls Short In Comeback, 75-72, At Tulane

NEW ORLEANS, La. -- Much like the first meeting between Southern Miss and Tulane, the game came down to the final play. But in this contest, the final play didn't go in the way of the Golden Eagles.

Southern Miss dropped its third-straight game with a 75-72 defeat on the road at Tulane on Wednesday. The Golden Eagles had a chance with 2.0 seconds remaining in the game but the inbounds play didn't go as planned and the Green Wave came away with the win.

Earlier in the year, the Golden Eagles came away with a 61-60 win in Hattiesburg on Jan. 22.

The team battled back down seven points with 20 seconds left but a 3-pointer by Rashaad Carruth and a putback by Mildon Ambres, coupled with a pair of Tulane turnovers, put Southern Miss back in position for the final play.

Despite the loss, the Golden Eagles (10-12, 1-8 in C-USA) had three players in double figures, two of them -- Carruth and Mike Ford -- scoring in the 20s. Carruth led the way with a game-high 24 points, one point shy of his career mark, while Ford added a career-high 22 points. Dante Stiggers finished with 11. Carruth and Ford each had five assists, while Ambres had a career-high 11 rebounds.

For Tulane (9-12, 3-7), Quincy Davis paced the team with 15 points, while Chris Moore added 13. Ben Benfield had 10 in the loss. Taylor Rochestie added a game-high 11 assists.

Southern Miss now returns to Hattiesburg to host Houston on Saturday, and then takes to the road once again, traveling to Cincinnati, Ohio, to take on the Bearcats on Wed., Feb. 16.
