Hattiesburg, Miss. - Southern Miss Baseball Coach Corky Palmer has announced the signing of Eddie Burger, a 6-1, 195-pound catcher from Long Beach High School in Long Beach, Miss., to a national letter of intent for the 2002-03 academic year. This marks the fifth signee of the spring signing period and seventh signee of the year for the Golden Eagles.

"Eddie is a big, and strong player who can help us with power from the right side," Palmer said. "He will add depth at the catcher position and also can play other positions. He is a hard worker and has a chance to compete for playing time as a freshman."

As a senior for Coach Mark Ross, Burger hit .429, finished with six homers and was named all-district, all-coast team and a first-team all-state 5A selection. He was selected as the team's all-around most valuable player in 2002 and was invited to participate in the Whitney Bank All-Star Classic.

As a junior, he was named the team's offensive MVP after hitting .405 and had four home runs. He was named all-district and to the all-coast team. As a sophomore, he finished with two home runs, while hitting .350.

Burger also lettered in football, being selected the team's most valuable offensive player for two years. He also was named to the all-coast preseason team. He was named to Who's Who American High School Students and to the Who's Who in Sports.

Southern Miss finished 36-22 during the 2002 season and returns six position starters, two starting pitchers and 18 letterwinners.
