2005 Conference USA Tournament Sponsored By POWERade Game 4 – Southern Miss 5, USF 3

HATTIESBURG, Miss.— Tournament host and third seed Southern Miss scored two runs in the sixth to break a 1-1 deadlock, added two additional runs in the eighth and held off a late ninth inning rally by USF to defeat the sixth seeded Bulls 5-3 today, in the final game of the first day of the 2005 Conference USA Tournament, sponsored by POWERade at Pete Taylor Park.

With the win, Southern Miss improves to 40-17, while USF falls to 32-30. Southern Miss has now won at least 40 games for the third consecutive season, the first time in school history it has accomplished the feat.

Barry Bowden (4-3) got the win for Southern Miss, pitching 6.2 innings, allowing four hits and one run, while walking one and striking out seven. Matt Caire earned his first career save, pitching the final 1.2 innings, allowing three hits and two runs, while striking out five. Casey Hudspeth (8-6) took the loss for USF, lasting five innings, allowing seven hits, three runs, walking three and striking out one.

USF took a 1-0 lead in top of the first. With one out, Joey Angelberger doubled down the left field line and advanced to third on a groundout by Jeff Baisley, before scoring on a RBI infield single by Brian Baisley.

Southern Miss knotted the game at 1-1 in the fourth. Trey Sutton singled to start the inning and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kevin Coker. Sutton went to third on a single to left by Marc Maddox, before scoring on a RBI single to left by Brad Willcutt. Maddox reached third on a deep flyout to center field by Jason Lowery. David Steele followed with a walk to load the bases, but Bull pitcher Casey Hudspeth got Trey Cuevas to pop out to center field, to escape further damage.

The Golden Eagles took their first lead of the game in the sixth, scoring two runs to take a 3-1 advantage. Willcutt walked to start the inning and went to third on a single to left field by Jason Lowery. Pinch hitter Jody Blount then reached on a fielder’s choice, but Willcutt was thrown out at home. Cuevas then followed with a RBI double that fell underneath Bull centerfielder Ty Taborelli’s glove, scoring Lowery and advancing Blount to third. Blount scored on a RBI sacrifice fly by Drew Carson, as Cuevas moved to third. He was left stranded at third, as Chris Matesich grounded out to end the frame.

USF threatened in the top of the seventh. Kris Howell singled to start the inning and went to second as Brandin Daniel reached on a fielding error by Maddox at third. After Hierlmier struck out, Daniel went to second but Howell was out at third trying to steal the base. Following a Golden Eagle pitching change to Tyler Perrett, Dexter Butler walked and Taborelli singled to load the bases, but Tim Orlosky flied out to left to end the threat.

The Bulls threatened again in the eighth. Angelberger singled to center to start the inning. Following a Golden Eagle pitching change to Daniel Best, J. Baisley reached on a fielding error by Southern Miss second baseman Sutton. Following a strikeout on a bunt by B. Baisley, pinch hitter Matt McHargue walked to load the bases. After another Golden Eagle pitching change to Matt Caire, he struck out Daniel and Hierlmeier to end the inning, leaving the bases loaded while protecting Southern Miss’ 3-1 lead.

Southern Miss added two insurance runs in the bottom of the inning, to take a 5-1 lead. Willcutt walked to start the inning and scored on a RBI double by Lowery that went to the right center field wall. Then with two outs, Carson reached on a fielding error by Bull rightfielder Hierlmeier, as he dropped a bloop fly ball along the right field line, which allowed Lowery to score.

USF loaded the bases in the top of the ninth and got a two RBI single by B. Baisley to make the score 5-3, but Caire struck out McHargue to end the game.

Southern Miss will meet TCU in a winner’s bracket contest at 7:30 p.m., Thursday. USF will play Louisville at 12:30 p.m., in a loser’s bracket game at 12:30 p.m.
