Baseball Takes Series With 6-2 Win Over UAB In Game Three

Southern Miss’ Anthony DeWitt pitched seven strong innings and Marc Maddox finished with a game-high four hits and Carlos Velasquez and Ryan Frith each finished with two hits and two RBIs to lead the Golden Eagles to a 6-2 win over UAB, today, at Young Memorial Field.

DeWitt (8-2) pitched seven innings, giving up one run on seven hits, walked two and struck out five. Mike Cashion pitched the final two innings, gave up one run on one hit and struck out one. UAB’s Grant Addison (1-2) dropped his second decision of the season, giving up five unearned runs on eight hits, walking four and striking out three.

Southern Miss (33-12, 14-7 C-USA) scored six runs on 11 hits and committed two errors, while UAB (21-22, 8-12 C-USA) finished with two runs on eight hits and committed two errors. Maddox had a game-high four hits and Carlos Velasquez, Ryan Frith and Beau Griffin finished with two hits each. The Blazers were led by Zac Ward, who finished with two hits.

After two scoreless innings, Southern Miss exploded for five runs in the third inning to take the 5-0 lead. Beau Griffin reached on a throwing error by UAB second baseman Seth Rollin, moved to second on Matt Shepherd’s ground out on a bunt attempt, moved to third when Jarrett Hoffpauir was hit by a pitch and scored on Brad Willcutt’s sacrifice fly out to right. Carlos Velasquez singled to right, plating both Maddox and Hoffpauir. Ryan Frith hit his 16th homer of the season over the left field wall to drive in two more runs. All five runs were unearned.

UAB scored a run in the fourth inning, cutting the Southern Miss lead to 5-1. Cole Helms hit a two-out single to centerfield and scored on Jeremy Moran’s single through the left side. The Blazers had runners on second and third with two outs in the sixth inning but the rally was halted when DeWitt struck out Moran looking to end the inning.

Southern Miss added another run in the eighth inning and extended its lead to 6-1. Maddox singled up the middle and was forced out when Shepherd reached on a ground out fielder’s choice to second base. Maddox singled to center, sending Shepherd to third and then scored on Hoffpauir’s grounder to short.

The Blazers made one final come-back attempt in the ninth inning. Jeremy Moran was hit by a pitch to reach, moved to third on two-straight balks by Southern Miss pitcher Mike Cashion. After the Golden Eagles retired two straight Blazer batters, Sam Clark doubled to center, plating Moran for a run. Josh Miljavac reached on an error by Southern Miss shortstop Shepherd and send Clark to third base. However, Eugene Rodriguez grounded out to Cashion to end the game.

Southern Miss hosts New Orleans on Tuesday, May 4, at 6:30 p.m., at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field in Hattiesburg, Miss.
