Women's Soccer Drops Non-Conference Match at Long Island, 1-0
Sept. 30, 2007
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - The Siena women's soccer team dropped its final non-conference contest of the season at Long Island this afternoon falling 1-0. Blackbirds graduate student Eleri Earnshaw notched the game winning goal in the 60th minute to send Long Island (4-4-1) past Siena (3-5-1). At the 59:08 mark, a failed Siena clear opportunity set the stage for what would prove to be the decisive goal. Earnshaw collected the loose ball and placed a chip shot from 25 yards out just over the hands of the Saints freshman goalkeeper Elizabeth Barna. The score marked Earnshaw's first at Long Island. Barna finished with a game-high two saves in 90 minutes of action. Siena continued to press the Blackbirds to even the contest. In the 68th minute, the Saints were awarded a penalty kick after a LIU defender pulled down a Saints attacker. Senior co-captain Amy Loughridge sent the kick to the left corner only to be saved by the lunging Blackbirds goalkeeper Felicia Amaral. Amaral earned the win in net posting one save on the afternoon. This marked her fourth shutout of the season. The Saints scoring opportunities dwindled over the last 20 minutes as Long Island's defensive efforts preserved a 1-0 victory. With the loss the Saints fall to 3-5-1 on the season. Siena begins league play on Saturday when they host Marist in Loudonville. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
