Siena Pounds UMass in Non-Conference Finale

May 7, 2002

Box Score

AMHERST, Mass. - Matt Mueller (Santa Clara, Calif./Cupertino) went deep twice for the second straight game to pace Siena's (26-23) 12-4 win at UMass Tuesday afternoon. Jim Buckley (Kansas City, Mo./Park Hill) and Kevin Roberts (Utica, N.Y./Notre Dame) each homered as well helping the Saints improve their school-record home run total to 55 just 49 games into the season.

With the Saints trailing 3-0 in the third, Buckley launched a three-run, two-out shot to left centerfield to tie the score. Roberts' blast gave the Saints the lead for good in the following frame, as junior Dale Szachewicz came out of the pen to shutdown the Minutemen bats. Szachewicz scattered seven hits in his five innings of work-allowing just one run to score in improving to 2-0 on the season.

Roberts had three hits and four RBI-Buckley and Mueller each drove in three runs for the victors. Blake Hanan and Fausto Franco rounded out the five Siena players who had multi-hit games; Franco added two stolen bases in two attempts to remain perfect (14-for-14) in that category this season.

Siena has won 23 of its last 28 games after beginning the season 3-18. The Saints take on archrival, and MAAC co-leader Marist at Dutchess Stadium in Fishkill this weekend.
