Baseball Splits at Cornell; Wins 7-6, loses 5-2

May 1, 2002

Box Score

The Siena Saints baseball squad beat Cornell University in the first game of a doubleheader at Hoy Field today, 7-6, but lost the second game 5-2. The Big Red scored in the second inning of game one on an RBI-single.

Blake Hanan (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) hit his third home run of the season (fourth of his career) in the third to lead off the third inning. Later in the inning, Kevin Roberts (Utica, N.Y./Notre Dame) hit a single and then stole second. After Josh Kean (South Colonie, N.Y./South Colonie/SCCC) struck out looking, Ryan Finn (Clinton, N.Y./Clinton) hit an RBI-double, plating Roberts. The Saints took the 2-1 lead.

In the fifth, Jim Buckley (Kansas City, Mo./Park Hill) hit a two-run home run, scoring himself and Finn, who got on after being hit by a pitch. Cornell scored twice in the home half of the fifth inning. In the sixth, Matt Mueller (Santa Clara, Calif./Cupertino-DeAnza College) hit fourth homer of the year to put the Saints up 5-4. Buckley would step up in the top of the ninth, going deep to score a two-run homer.

The nightcap was a difficult affair with the Big Red holding Siena to only five hits. Josh Kean hit a home run to left-center in the top of the third with one out. Luis (pronounced Lou-IS) Khoury, the reigning MAAC Rookie of the Week, hit an RBI-single to left field to bring home Buckley in the only other run the Saints would manage in the nightcap.

Dave Pahucki (New Hampton, N.Y./Goshen) started game one and struck out six in his three innings on the mound in game one. Sophomore Josh Courage (Bethesda, Md./Waldorf-GWU) put in seven innings and gave up three runs, fanning two. In the second game, Brent Wengert struggled in three innings, striking out two.

The team will travel for a MAAC series to Canisius in Buffalo, N.Y. on Saturday, May 4th for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. and will conclude the weekend with a single-game on Sunday, May 5, with a start time slated for noon.
