Saints Rally to Split With New York Tech

April 24, 2002

Box Score

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Matt Mueller broke a scoreless tie with a game-winning three-run home run to right centerfield as Siena (19-22) salvaged the second game of a doubleheader with New York Tech (24-14) 3-0. The Bears won the opener 9-7. In the nightcap, three Siena pitchers combined for a two-hit shutout. Sophomore Mark Sanborn worked the final three innings allowing both hits en route to the victory. Josh Copskey and Justin Knoff faced the minimum in four innings of prep work for the victors. Jim Buckley led off the decisive frame with a double to right-center, and after Tony Cipolla popped out, the Bears elected to walk freshman designated hitter Luis Khoury to face Mueller. The firstbaseman responded with the second home run of his Siena career. In the opener Tom Merkle hit two homered in his first two at bats to pace Tech's offense. Buckley's first inning home run tied the score at two and Siena momentarily grabbed the lead in their second at bat on an RBI double to rightfield by Blake Hanan. Brian Goldberg's three run home run in the sixth provided the necessary insurance to thwart a seventh inning rally by the Saints. Khoury joined Buckley with two hits in the first game for Siena. The Saints have won 15 of their last 18 games-a streak they will look to improve upon Saturday at noon when they take on Saint Peter's College in a conference doubleheader.
