Redhawks Fall In Regular Season Finale
May 8, 2005
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - (Sunday, May 8, 2005) The visiting Lady Govs spoiled "Senior Day" for the Redhawks in both team's final regular season game winning 4-2, Sunday afternoon at the Southeast Softball Complex. The Redhawks managed only four hits, two of which were solo homeruns. The Lady Govs (17-37, 10-15 OVC) broke out of their hitting slump in the second inning when starting pitcher Natasha Anderson helped her own cause hitting a solo homer for a quick 1-0 lead. The Redhawks (25-26, 13-14 OVC) matched the Lady Govs with a solo homerun of their own in the third inning when Megan McDonald (Cape Girardeau, MO/Cape Central) hit her eighth homerun of the season over the leftfield fence. In the fifth the Lady Govs finally got to Redhawks starter Amy Fahnestock (Ste. Genevieve, MO/Wabash CC) scoring two runs for the 3-1 lead. Those two runs chased Fahnestock (14-14) as she pitched 5.0 innings allowing three runs on seven hits. Meanwhile Anderson was rolling as she was backed by outstanding play by her defense including two outstretched catches by Ami Bush that robbed the Redhawks of RBI opportunities and extra bases. Freshman Elaine Fisher (St. Peters, MO/Francis Howell North) came in to relieve Fahnestock and gave up an unearned run in the sixth. Fisher extended her streak of not issuing a walk to 37 innings. In the seventh Lyndsey Webb (Las Vegas, NV/Las Vegas HS) was able to get a hold of a Anderson pitch and launch it over the leftfield fence for her first career homerun. Anderson then settled down to retire the last two Redhawks to complete to pick up her 12th victory of the season.
Webb's homerun extended the team's record for homeruns in a season to 33 homeruns this season. Despite the loss the Redhawks clinched the No. 5 seed at the O'Reilly Ohio Valley Conference Softball Championship Tournament. They will face No. 4 seed Tennessee-Martin in the Tournament's opening game Thursday, May 12 at 10:00 p.m. in Jacksonville, Ala |
