Redhawks Power Pass Tigers, 9-1
April 2, 2005
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - (Saturday, April 2, 2005) The Southeast Missouri State softball team made short work of Tennessee State on Saturday afternoon winning 9-1 in six innings. The Redhawks scored four runs in the top of the sixth, keyed by a Michelle Summers (Glendale, CA/Hoover) three-run shot to centerfield to eight-run rule the Tigers. Heading into the sixth with a comfortable 5-0 lead, the Redhawks (15-12, 4-3 OVC) scored all their runs with two outs. With runners at first and second, Stephanie Mata (Wheeling, IL/Wheeling HS) singled to left to drive in Lindsay Pickering (St. Charles, MO/St. Charles West HS). Summers then hit her team-leading seventh homer of the season to give the Redhawks a 9-0 lead and eventually the win. The Redhawks struck early as they scored four runs in the first. Summers walked to lead-off the game and latter advanced to second on a throwing error by the Tigers (4-21, 0-7 OVC) second baseman leaving Kelly Birk (Huntington Beach, CA/Edison HS) safe at first base. Stephanie Huffman (Valmayer, IL/Forest Park CC) singles to center to load the bases for Megan McDonald (Cape Girardeau, MO/Cape Central). The hot-hitting McDonald then tripled to right center driving in all three runners. McDonald later scored on another Tigers error to give the Redhawks a quick 4-0 lead.
The following inning Summers doubled to left center and scored on a Victoria Torrez (Garden Grove, CA/Cypress CC) single to make it 5-0. Amy Fahnestock (Ste. Genevieve, MO/Wabash CC) pitched her tenth complete game of the season, picking up her ninth win of the season. She allowed one run on two hits and struckout four Tigers. The two teams only played one game of the scheduled doubleheader due to weather. The two teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow starting at noon. |
