Redhawks Soccer Posts 3-0 Shutout Win Over Troy

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Freshman forward Courtney Alexander (Liberty, MO/Liberty) tallied a hat trick as Southeast Missouri State soccer snapped its two-match losing skid here at Houck Stadium Sunday with a 3-0 victory over Troy. With the win, Southeast improves its record to 2-2, while Troy falls to 1-3-1 on the year. Both teams battled back and fourth through a scoreless first half despite Southeast holding a 5-0 advantage in shots, including four attempts on goal. The Redhawks struck first in the 55th minute after Alexander scored on a through ball in the middle off the foot of junior midfielder Margie Schaeffler (St. Louis, MO/Incarnate Word) to take a 1-0 lead. Alexander scored again in the 87th minute by driving a penalty kick attempt past Troy goalkeeper Jennifer Currie, giving the home team a two-goal advantage. She closed the scoring in the 90th minute with a breakaway goal with assists by sophomore midfielder Jessica Kaiz and sophomore defender Lauren Costello "I was happy for Courtney getting a hat trick today and she provided the offensive spark that we've been looking for this season," said Southeast head coach Heather Nelson. "I thought Casey Kraft also played well for us today as she controlled the center of the field." Southeast managed to outshoot Troy by a 12-1 margin and held a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks, while senior goalkeeper Lindsay Pickering (St. Charles, MO/St. Charles West) only needed one save to record her second shutout of the year. Currie tallied a match-best six saves in the net for the Trojans The Redhawks are back in action on Thursday, Sept. 14 with a road match-up against Memphis at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex with a 7 p.m. start time. |
