Soccer Falls In Road Opener At DePaul, 3-2

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Alissa VonderHaar scored two goals and an assist to help DePaul knock off visiting Southeast Missouri State soccer, 3-2, at Wish Field in Chicago, Ill. With the win, DePaul improves to 2-2-1 on the year, while Southeast drops its record to 1-2.

In the first half, the Blue Demons jumped to an early 1-0 lead after VonderHaar scored in the fifth minute off a rebound from a corner kick, assisted by Jennifer Dyer and Jen Lee. VondenHaar struck again in the 18th minute with a 1v1 goal past Redhawks goalkeeper Lindsay Pickering (St. Charles, MO/St. Charles West) to give the home team a 2-0 advantage.

DePaul claimed a 3-0 lead in the 61st minute thanks to a header goal by senior Lea Hill off the feet of Dyer and VonderHaar. Southeast snapped the possible shutout five minutes later with a goal by junior forward Alaina Lacopo (Troy, IL/Triad) off an assist by freshman forward Courtney Alexander (Liberty, MO/Liberty). Junior midfielder Margie Schaeffler (St. Louis, MO/Incarnate Word) scored the Redhawks' second tally of the afternoon off a corner kick assist by sophomore defender Megan McGrath (Hawthorn Woods, IL/Carmel) to slice their deficit to one, but the Blue Demons held on defensively to capture the win.

Southeast held advantages over DePaul in both shot attempts (18-17) and corner kicks (5-3). Alexander led the Redhawks with nine shot attempts, including six on goal, and Pickering finished the match with six saves. LaRocca finished with a match-best 10 saves and Dyer tallied three assists for DePaul.

The Redhawks are back in action at Houck Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 10 with a non-conference contests against Troy slated for a start time of 1 p.m.
