Black Team Uses Strong Beam Performance to Defeat Red Team in Intra-Squad Meet
Dec. 4, 2007 By Patrick Clark - CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - (Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2007) Despite only winning one of the possible four events, the Black Team defeated the Red Team, 150.650-149.950 in the Redhawks annual Intra-Squad Meet held at Parker Gym on Tuesday evening. The Black Team's score of 38.100 on the balance beam and sophomore Bryanna Wong's individual performance proved to be the difference. Wong won individual titles on the Uneven Bars and the Balance Beam. Those two victories secured Wong the All-Around title. Wong had the evenings highest score on the bars as she scored a 9.800. Sophomore Jacqueline Heath finished second (9.750) for the Red Team followed by teammate Kara Gibbons (9.650). Freshman Lauren Dinan finished fourth for the Black Team with a score of 9.500. On the beam, Wong shared the individual title with junior Sandra Blake of the Red Team with identical scores of 9.700. Freshman Christina Sundgren finished second with a score of 9.650 for the Black Team followed by fellow freshman Amanda Schoenbaum (9.550) for the Red Team. Blake tied with Red teammate Amber Garlotte for the vault title with a score of 9.650. Starlyn Schwartz was the top placer for the Black Team with a score of 9.600 for a second place finish. Lauren Dinan (9.550) finished third. Garlotte won the floor exercise with a score of 9.600 followed by Blake (9.550). Dinan (9.350) and Sundgren (9.300) finished third and fourth respectively for the Black team. Dinan finished second behind Wong's 38.150 in the All-Around with a score of 37.750. Blake was the top finisher for the Red Team with a score of 37.600 tying her with Sundgren for a third place finish. The Red Team lost despite defeating the Black Team 47.450-46.950 on the vault, 45.950-37.750 on the bars and 28.400-27.850 on the floor. "I was very pleased by the team's performance tonight," commented Head Coach Tom Farden. "We have some fine-tuning before our first meet but we are right where we need to be at this stage of the season." The Gymhawks open the season with a dual meet on January 18 at Houck Field House against NCAA power Kentucky. The meet will start at 7:00 p.m. and will be the Gymhawks Outback Steakhouse Invitational. Following the meet the Gymhawks will host a banquet at Outback Steakhouse, tickets for the banquet can be purchased through the team with all proceeds supporting the program.
