Redhawks Gymnastics Fly Past No. 33 Texas Woman's University

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - (Saturday, February 04, 2006) It didn't take long for the Redhawks gymnastics team to overcome inexperience and injuries as the Redhawks recorded their second-straight dual win as they defeated No. 33 Texas Woman's University, 192.925-192.000 Saturday afternoon in Houck Field House. The win extended the Redhawks home dual winning streak to four dating back to last season.

The Redhawks (3-2, 1-1 MIC) recorded a season-high score for the fourth-straight meet as they won three of the four events. Included in the win was a near flawless routine on the bars by the whole team as they recorded a score of 48.925 which ranks third on the school's all-time list.

The Redhawks won on the bars despite not winning the individual title. Instead the Redhawks placed second thru fifth to secure the win. No Redhawk scored less than 9.725 with Sandra Blake (Tri-Cities, Wash./Mid-Columbia) leading the way with a season-high score of 9.850. Maureen Grimaldi (Kansas City, Mo./Eagles) finished third (9.825) and Danyelle Aber (Gurnee, Ill./ Ultimate Gymnastics) followed her in fourth (9.775) as each recorded new season highs on the bars. Brystol Powelski (Franklin, Wis./ Salto Gymnastics) finished fifth with a score of 9.750 and Chelsea Unold (Plymouth, Minn./Twin City Twisters) rounded out the scorers with a sixth place showing.

Courtney Arno, who came into the meet ranked 22nd nationally on the bars won with a score of 9.875 for the Pioneers (4-5, 0-1 MIC).

On the vault the Redhawks recorded a season-high score of 48.225 to capture the vault title. Freshman Starlyn Schwartz (Pensacola, Fla./First City) led the way with her best showing of the year with a score of 9.725 to finish second. Powelski finished tied for third with a score of 9.675 and Alison Ezell (Kansas City, Kan./ Alpha Omega) tied a career-high with a score of 9.650 to garner fifth place honors.

The Pioneers won on the beam as they outscored the Redhawks 47.950-47.225. Blake added yet another second place showing with a score of 9.750 which set a new season high. Schwartz finished fourth with a season-high score of 9.675. Brittany Parker won with a score of 9.800.

With the outcome still undecided the Redhawks put all doubt to rest as they dominated the floor exercise with a score of 48.550. Blake won the team's only individual title with a season-high 9.825. Ezell finished second with a career-high 9.775. Grimaldi finished third, she to scored a season-high with a score of 9.750. Powelski tied her career-high with a score of 9.600 to tie her with teammate Chelsea Unold for fifth.

Blake recorded her third-straight all-around title with a season-high score of 38.975. Powelski finished second with a career-high 38.450 followed by Ezell with a score of 38.350.

The Redhawks improve to 10-1 under Head Coach Tom Farden in home dual meets.

The Redhawks will face another ranked opponent next week when they travel to face MIC rival Illinois-Chicago on Saturday, February 11. The meet will start at 7:00 p.m.
