Sept. 9, 2003

Cape Girardeau, Mo - Southeast men's golf opened their season at home as hosts to the Harris Fall Classic, which took place at Bent Creek Golf Course in Jackson, Missouri this past Monday and Tuesday. Southeast placed in the middle of the pack of the 16-team tournament with a seventh place finish.

Brian Sheehan was the only Southeast golfer to finish in the top 20, shooting a five over par and coming in 10th place out of 90 golfers.

The Southern Illinois-Carbondale golf team took first place, shooting 13 over. Samford University finished in second with a 16 over, while Tennessee Tech rounded out the top three teams, shooting 23 over.

Andy McRae of Samford came in first overall at seven under. Robert Dinwiddie of Tennessee State came in second overall at five under. Brian Norman led the way for Southern Illinois, shooting a two under.

Southern Illinois and Samford each had three players in the top 20.

Other noteables for Southeast include Mark Schmitz, who shot eight over and came in at 21st place. Kent Phillips and Brandon Couch each finished one shot behind Schmitz at nine over and tied with six other golfers for 25th overall.

Next up for the golf team is a trip to Normal, Illinois, where Illinois State will host the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate tournament September 14-15.
