Simonhoff Named National Special Teams Player of the Week
Oct. 26, 2006 Cape Girardeau, Mo. - Senior punter David Simonhoff of Southeast Missouri State University has been selected as national I-AA Special Teams Player of the Week by the Football Gazette. Simonhoff, this week's OVC Specialist of the Week, averaged 50.2 yards per punt against Eastern Kentucky last Saturday. He had two punts inside the 20 including his long punt of 69 yards. Earlier this season Simonhoff was honored by Football Gazette after averaging 51.2 yards per punt against Jacksonville State. Simonhoff is currently ranked second nationally in I-AA punting with an aveage of 45.88 yards per punt. The national leader averages 46 yards per punt. "Simonhoff had a very good game against Eastern Kentucky," said Southeast coach Tony Samuel. "He was very consistent and he put two punts inside the 20 yard line." Named a first team preseason All-American by The Sports Network and I-AA.org Simonhoff was a first team All-America pick by the American Football Coaches Association after last season when he again led the OVC in punting. In 2004 he established a new Southeast and OVC individual season record when he averaged 46 yards per punt. During his Southeast career he has three punts of 80 yards or more and nine punts of 70 yards or more. The Redhawks will play at Murray State on Saturday with a 1 p.m. kickoff at Stewart Stadium in Murray, Ky. |
