Witczak Named Division I-AA Special Teams Player of the Week Southeast punter was instrumental in victory over Illinois State.
CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO. (September 26, 2000) - Jason Witczak (Jr., North Fond du Lac, Wis.) was recently named NCAA Division I-AA Special Teams Player of the Week after helping Southeast Missouri State to a victory over then 12th ranked Illinois State on September 16th. Witczak averaged 43.0 yards per punt on 11 attempts and had a long attempt of 62 yards. Witczak also had punts of 58, 53 and 50 yards that help pin the Redbirds deep all night and help Southeast pull off the 28-25 upset. "It was just a great feeling to get back into the flow of the game," Witczak said. "I had been hurt and hadn't practiced for the previous 17 days, so it was just a good feeling to get some quality kicks, pin Illinois State deep and help out the team," Witczak said. Witczak currently ranks second in the Ohio Valley Conference and 10th nationally in punting with a season average of 42.81 yards per punt. Witczak came to Southeast after spending two years with current Indian head coach Tim Billings at Marshall. As a backup kicker, Witczak kicked a 46-yard field goal against Miami in 1998. Also at Marshall, Witczak was a member of the Thundering Herd golf team. At Horace Mann High School, Witczak earned athletic letters in football, golf, basketball and cross country and was twice named all-conference at wide receiver and kicker. The NCAA Division I-AA Player of the Week award is sponsored by Don Hansen's National Weekly Football Gazette. For more information on Witczak and the award log onto http://www.donhansen.com. |
