Southeast Basketball Goes On The Road
Feb. 2, 2005 Southeast Missouri @ Tennessee-Martin Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005 Skyhawk Arena, Martin, Tenn., 7:30 p.m. The Teams: Southeast Missouri State is 9-10 overall and 4-4 in the OVC after upsetting Samford 72-65 in overtime on Saturday night. It was the third straight win for the Redhawks with home wins over Austin Peay 65-52 land Jacksonville State 84-65. The wins followed two consecutive overtime losses. On Jan. 13 Southeast lost to Tennessee State 105-101 in double-overtime and on Jan. 20. Southeast lost to Tennessee Tech 82-81 in overtime. The Redhawks also have league road losses at Austin Peay and Tennessee Tech and an OVC home win over Eastern Illinois. Seven of the 10 losses have been by four points or less. Tennessee-Martin is 4-15 overall and 1-7 in the OVC. The Skyhawks have lost five straight. The Coaches: Gary Garner is 360-273 in his 22nd year as a collegiate head coach. He is 113-108 in his eighth year at Southeast.
Brett Campbell is 63-97 in his sixth season at UT-Martin.
The Series: Southeast leads the series 31-17. Last Season: Southeast split two games with the Skyhawks, winning 89-78 at the Show Me Center and losing 88-78 in the season finale at Martin. SOUTHEAST NOTES WIN STREAK: The Redhawks modest three-game win streak is the longest since Southeast won five straight near the end of the 2000-2001 season. DYNAMIC DUO: Dainmon Gonner leads the OVC in scoring (20.4) and steals (2.9) while Reggie Golson leads the league in rebounding (8.7) and blocks (2.5). Gonner and Golson were teammates at Hutchinson CC. GONNER LEADS OVC SCORING: Junior Dainmon Gonner, selected as the OVC Player of the Week on Jan. 21 after averaging 30 points and 8.5 rebounds per game in two OVC games, continues to lead the OVC in scoring with 20.4 points per game which ranks him 13th nationally. Gonner had a career high 37 points and a career high 12 rebounds in the double-overtime loss at Tennessee State. The 37 points topped an earlier 36 point effort at Bradley. Gonner also leads Southeast and the OVC in steals with 2.9 per game which ranks him 18th nationally. GOLSON LEADS REBOUNDERS: Senior Reggie Golson leads the team and OVC in rebounding with 8.7 per game. He also leads the OVC in defensive rebounds. In OVC games only, Golson is the league leader in rebounds with 8.8 per game and blocks with 3.5 per game. Golson also leads the team and OVC in blocked shots with 47 after a career high six blocks vs. Tennessee Tech.. Golson leads the team in field goal percentage with .562, third best in the OVC. Golson was named the OVC Player of the Week on Dec. 13 after averaging 15 points and 10.5 rebounds per game. He had a career high 14 rebounds vs. Montana. PARADOSKI LEADS OVC IN ASSIST/TO RATIO: Freshman Paul Paradoski currently leads the OVC in assist/turnover ratio at 2.24. He was the Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Week on Nov. 30 after recording a double-double in his first collegiate start against Rockhurst. Paradoski had 10 points and 11 rebounds. WINANS RANKS 5th ON SCORING LIST: Senior Derek Winans has moved up to fifth on the all-time career scoring list at Southeast. He has 1,399 points to rank as the second leading active career scoring leader in the OVC. Winans did not start practice until Monday, Nov. 29, because of a stress fracture in his leg. He gradually worked his way back into playing shape. He got his first start of the season on Jan. 8 at Tennessee Tech. In addition to being second in active career scoring in the OVC, Winans leads the active career leaders in 3-pointers made with 207, ranks second in steals with 140, third in assists with 260 and 10th in rebounding with 249. Winans streak of having started 84 consecutive games ended at Bradley. He has been Southeast's top scorer for each of the last three seasons and is the school's first ever basketball Academic All-American. WILLOUGHBY GETS HOT: Terrick Willoughby scored a career-high 25 points in last Thursday night's win over Jacksonville State and came back with 14 points against Samford. For the week, Willoughby averaged 19.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. He shot 16-29 (.551) from the field, 4-8 (.500) from three and 5-5 from the line. BELCHER PROVIDES SPARK: Ryan "Fuzzy" Belcher continues to provide a spark off the bench. Last week he had nine points vs. Jacksonville State and 11 vs. Samford. Belcher is 6-7 from three in the last four games. For the season, Belcher is 63% from the field, 53% from three and 76% from the line. HALE LOST FOR SEASON: Senior Brett Hale, the top 3-point shooter in the OVC, is out for the season with a fractured wrist. He suffered during practice at Tennessee Tech on Jan. 7. At the time of his injury, he led the OVC in 3-point field goal percentage with 22-40 for .550. He shot .506 from the field and .875 from the free throw line. Hale needed 50 more points to become the 19th player in Southeast history to score 1,000 career points. He ended his career with 950 career points. INJURIES: James White is out for the season with a knee injury while Brett Hale is out for the season with a fractured right wrist. Ketshner Guerrier, who has missed 13 games with a knee injury suffered in shoot around prior to the South Dakota State game, resumed practice this week. Mike Nelke is playing with a small fracture in his left wrist. BUZZER BEATER: Mike Nelke's off balance 3-pointer at the buzzer provided Southeast with a 59-58 win over South Dakota State. Nelke, who was hampered with a bad wrist, was 0-8 from the field prior to his game winning shot. FRANCIS BREAKS OUT: Waylon Francis had his best game of the season at Western Kentucky with a career high 10 points and nine rebounds. He averages 2.2 points and 2.3 rebounds per game. SID STREAK: Ron Hines, Southeast Sports Information Director has worked 715 consecutive basketball games. He has not missed a game since 1980. THE REDHAWKS ARE BORN: All athletic teams at Southeast became Redhawks Saturday, Jan. 22, when the new Redhawk mascot was introduced prior to the Austin Peay game. EARLY SIGNING: Southeast has signed 6-7 Tyrell Curry of State Fair Community College to a national letter of intent. Curry played at Cincinnati State Community College last season where he averaged 11 points and nine rebounds per game. He is originally from Tacoma, Wash. NEXT: Southeast plays at Murray State on Saturday, 7:15 p.m. and stays on the road for a game at Eastern Illinois on Tuesday. Erik Sean will be in his fourth season as the play-by-play voice of Southeast basketball. Todd Bonacki will add commentary for home games while Ron Hines will do color on the road games.
