Southeast Basketball Hosts Jacksonville State and Samford
Jan. 25, 2005 Jacksonville State @ Southeast Missouri Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005 Show Me Center, 7:30 p.m. Samford @ Southeast Missouri Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005 Show Me Center, 7:30 p.m. The Teams: Southeast Missouri State is 7-10 overall and 2-4 in the OVC after beating Austin Peay 65-52 on Saturday. The win followed two consecutive overtime losses. On Jan. 13 Southeast lost to Tennessee State 105-101 in double-overtime and last Thursday night, Southeast lost to Tennessee Tech 82-81 in overtime. The Redhawks also have league road losses at Austin Peay and Tennessee Tech and an OVC home win over Eastern Illinois. Seven of the 10 losses have been by four points or less. Jacksonville State is 4-14 overall and 0-6 in the OVC. The Gamecocks have lost 12 straight. Samford is 11-6 overall and 6-0 and in first place in the OVC. The Bulldogs play at Eastern Illinois on Thursday night. The Coaches: Gary Garner is 358-273 in his 22nd year as a collegiate head coach. He is 111-108 in his eighth year at Southeast.
Mike La Plante is 60-73 in his fifth season at Jacksonville State. Jimmy Tillette is 125-95 in his ninth season at Samford. The Series: Jacksonville State leads the series 2-0. Samford leads the series 2-0. SOUTHEAST NOTES DYNAMIC DUO: Dainmon Gonner leads the OVC in scoring (20.6) and steals (2.7) while Reggie Golson leads the league in rebounding (8.8) and blocks (2.5). Gonner and Golson were teammates at Hutchinson CC. GONNER LEADS OVC SCORING: Junior Dainmon Gonner, selected as the OVC Player of the Week last week after averaging 30 points and 8.5 rebounds per game in two OVC games, continues to lead the OVC in scoring with 20.6 points per game which ranks him 17th nationally. Gonner had a career high 37 points and a career high 12 rebounds in last week's double-overtime loss at Tennessee State. The 37 points topped an earlier 36 point effort at Bradley. Gonner also leads Southeast and the OVC in steals with 2.7 per game. GOLSON LEADS REBOUNDERS: Senior Reggie Golson leads the team and OVC in rebounding with 8.8 per game. He also leads the OVC in offensive rebounds. In OVC games only, Golson is the league leader in rebounds with 9.2 per game. Golson also leads the team and OVC in blocked shots with 42 after a career high six blocks last Thursday night vs. Tennessee Tech.. Golson leads the team in field goal percentage with .556, third best in the OVC. Golson was named the OVC Player of the Week on Dec. 13 after averaging 15 points and 10.5 rebounds per game. He had a career high 14 rebounds vs. Montana. WINANS RANKS 5th ON SCORING LIST: Senior Derek Winans has moved up to fifth on the all-time career scoring list at Southeast. He has 1,385 points to rank as the second leading active career scoring leader in the OVC. Winans did not start practice until Monday, Nov. 29, because of a stress fracture in his leg. He gradually worked his way back into playing shape. He got his first start of the season on Jan. 8 at Tennessee Tech. In addition to being second in active career scoring in the OVC, Winans leads the active career leaders in 3-pointers made with 205, ranks second in steals with 137, third in assists with 254 and 10th in rebounding with 248. Winans streak of having started 84 consecutive games ended at Bradley. He has been Southeast's top scorer for each of the last three seasons and is the school's first ever basketball Academic All-American. HALE LOST FOR SEASON: Senior Brett Hale, the top 3-point shooter in the OVC, is out for the season with a fractured wrist. He suffered during practice at Tennessee Tech on Jan. 7. At the time of his injury, he led the OVC in 3-point field goal percentage with 22-40 for .550. He shot .506 from the field and .875 from the free throw line. Hale needed 50 more points to become the 19th player in Southeast history to score 1,000 career points. He ended his career with 950 career points. INJURIES: James White is out for the season with a knee injury while Ketshner Guerrier is out for another week with a knee injury suffered during shoot around prior to the South Dakota State game. Brett Hale is out for the season with a fractured right wrist. Mike Nelke is playing with a small fracture in his left wrist. BUZZER BEATER: Mike Nelke's off balance 3-pointer at the buzzer provided Southeast with a 59-58 win over South Dakota State. Nelke, who was hampered with a bad wrist, was 0-8 from the field prior to his game winning shot. PARADOSKI LEADS OVC IN ASSIST/TO RATIO: Freshman Paul Paradoski currently leads the OVC in assist/turnover ratio at 1.97. He was the Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Week on Nov. 30 after recording a double-double in his first collegiate start against Rockhurst. Paradoski had 10 points and 11 assists. FRANCIS BREAKS OUT: Waylon Francis had his best game of the season at Western Kentucky with a career high 10 points and nine rebounds. He averages 2.2 points and 2.4 rebounds per game. COPI-RITE PLAYER OF THE GAME: Copi-Rite of Cape Girardeau sponsors a Player of the Game after each home game. Southeast was 2-1. SID STREAK: Ron Hines, Southeast Sports Information Director has worked 712 consecutive basketball games. He has not missed a game since 1980. THE REDHAWKS ARE BORN: All athletic teams at Southeast became Redhawks Saturday, Jan. 22, when the new Redhawk mascot was introduced prior to the Austin Peay game. EARLY SIGNING: Southeast has signed 6-7 Tyrell Curry of State Fair Community College to a national letter of intent. Curry played at Cincinnati State Community College last season where he averaged 11 points and nine rebounds per game. He is originally from Tacoma, Wash. NEXT: Southeast goes on the road to play at Tennessee-Martin on Thursday, Feb. 3 and at Murray State on Saturday, Feb. 5. SOUTHEAST ON RADIO: All Southeast games can be heard on the Southeast Radio Network anchored by K-103 FM in Cape Girardeau. Erik Sean will be in his fourth season as the play-by-play voice of Southeast basketball. Todd Bonacki will add commentary for home games while Ron Hines will do color on the road games.
