Karoly Named MWC Swimmer Of The Week

Jan. 29, 2004

Colorado Springs, Colo. - San Diego State freshman Stella Karoly has been selected the Mountain West Conference Women's Swimmer of the Week, becoming the second Aztec to win the honor this season.

Karoly, a Kapolei, Hawaii, product, earned her first career weekly accolade by bringing home three individual wins and a second and third place individual finish last week, setting five personal best times in the process. She also was a part of two relay wins.

In the Aztec victory over Loyola Marymount on Jan. 23, she opened the meet helping the 200 medley relay squad to a win (1:51.79) and followed with wins in the 100 butterfly (58.55) and 200 individual medley (2:09.80), both personal best times.

The next day in a win over Pepperdine, Karoly led the 400 medley relay quartet to a first-place finish (4:02.68), then swam personal best times in the 400 individual medley (4:36.42), the 100 freestyle (53.99, second-place finish), and the 200 butterfly (2:09.01, third-place finish) to complete her meet.

SDSU's other MWC Swimmer of the Week award went to senior Hannah Ryan, who earned the accolade after her performance in the dual meet against New Mexico last November.

San Diego State concludes its dual meet season this weekend as it travels to San Luis Obispo to take on Cal Poly on Saturday (Jan. 31) at 1:00 p.m. The team will then have three weeks to prepare for the Mountain West Conference Championships to be held in Oklahoma City Feb. 18-21.
