SDSU CONCLUDES REGULAR SEASON AGAINST UCLA ON SUNDAY
*San Diego State winds up its 2005 regular season as it hosts Pac-10 foe UCLA on Sunday, Nov. 13, at 1:00 p.m. at the SDSU Sports Deck.
*The game will mark the Bruins' first visit to San Diego State since the 2001 season and only their second since 1993.
*The game also marks 2005 Aztec Senior Day with four players (Matt Couch, Heath Creager, Mike Mercuriali and Eric Santaigo) playing their final home match for the Aztecs.
SERIES HISTORY
*San Diego State's record in the series with UCLA stands at 3-25-3. The teams first met during the 1969 season, and they faced each other annually while both were members of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (1992-95, 99) before the Pac-10 brought SDSU men's soccer on board in 2000.
*The Bruins had won the last 10 meetings with SDSU until the teams played to a 0-0 tie in Los Angeles in mid-October. San Diego State's last win against UCLA was a 3-2 overtime decision in San Diego during the 1989 season.
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION
*UCLA, ranked as high as sixth in the nation this week (Soccer America), enters Sunday's match with a record of 11-4-3 overall and 6-1-2 in the Pac-10, having clinched first place last weekend. The Bruins are coming off a 4-2 non-conference loss at the hands of University of San Diego on Thursday.
*The team's leading scorers are Kamini Hall (6g, 8a) and Jonathan Bornstein (5g, 1a). Goalie Eric Reed has a 0.49 goals against average. UCLA has a pair of U-20 national team starters in defenders Marvel Wynne and Patrick Ianni. Wynne is from Poway while teammate Sal Zizzo is a freshman from Patrick Henry HS in San Diego.
LAST WEEK
*The Aztecs had a loss and a tie, both in overtime during last weekend's trip to northern California.
*At Cal on Friday, SDSU fell behind midway through the second half, then lost defender Matt Couch to a red card. Despite being a man down, SDSU tied the contest with three minutes left on a goal by Heath Creager. After being reduced to nine players due to a second yellow card to Raul Bautista, the Aztecs fell in the first overtime as the Golden Bears scored the winning goal six minutes into the first extra period.
*On Sunday at Stanford, the Aztecs played the Cardinal to a 0-0 draw. San Diego State goalie Tally Hall made a season-high nine saves in the scoreless affair. It was the second time the teams played to a tie this season after a 1-1 stalemate in late September in San Diego.
AZTECS IN THE NATIONAL POLLS
*San Diego State remains among the ranks teams in the four national polls this week. The Aztecs took slight drops in the College Soccer News, Soccer America and Soccer Times polls. They are not ranked in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll.
*Those polls and where they may be found on the Internet are as follows:
College Soccer News (collegesoccernews.com) - 14th
Soccer Times (soccertimes.com) - 22nd
Soccer America (socceramerica.com) - 18th
NSCAA (nscaa.com) - not ranked
*In addition, this week regional rankings compiled by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) listed SDSU seventh in the Far West.
AMONG THE NATIONAL LEADERS
*Entering this week, San Diego State ranks among the national leaders in three categories:
Goals Against Average - 2nd (0.44)
Shots on Goal Save Percentage - 1st (0.900)
Shutout Percentage - 2nd (0.71)
*Tally Hall was ranked among the NCAA Division I leaders in two categories: goals against average (2nd - 0.384) and shots on goal save percentage (2nd - 0.911).
*With UCLA's loss at USD on Thursday in which it gave up four goals, SDSU's Hall enters Sunday's contest as the national leader in both goals against average and shots on goal save percentage. In addition, as a team the Aztecs now lead the nation in goals against average as well.
HALL ADDS TO SHUTOUT RECORD
*With his shutout of Stanford last Sunday, SDSU goalie Tally Hall added to his SDSU record for shutouts with his 12th of the season. Hall has broken the old mark of 10 shutouts set by Bryan Finnerty during the 1989 campaign.
*San Diego State has recorded 12 shutouts in its 17 matches, the most in a season since the 1989 squad had the 11 over its 22 matches.
*The school record for shutouts in a season is 14, set by the 1988 squad that advanced to the NCAA Tournament. SDSU's 11 shutouts this fall ties for the third-most ever in a season by an Aztec squad since the program began back in 1968.
AZTEC NOTES
*SDSU's six draws this fall is a new school mark for ties in a season. Over the previous 37 seasons, SDSU had finished the year with four ties on seven occasions.
*SDSU's seven overtime games this season is not the most ever for an Aztec squad. That distinction goes to the 2001 team that played eight overtime contests and went 3-1-4 in those games.
*The Aztecs' seven home wins this fall is the most in season since 1998 when they also recorded seven.
*The Aztecs have not given up a goal in the first half through their first 17 matches. The 20 goals they have scored this season surpasses their total for the 2004 campaign when they netted 16 in 19 games.
