Baseball Earns Number-Two Seed At MWC Tournament

May 17, 2003

San Diego - As a result of Air Force's 17-11 victory over Brigham Young Saturday afternoon, San Diego State will be the number-two seed at the Mountain West Conference Tournament which will be held May 21-24 at Isotopes Park in Albuquerque.

With the loss, BYU and SDSU finished league play with identical 18-12 records. The Cougars and Aztecs split six regular-season contests, but San Diego State earned the No. 2 seed after winning the tie breaker vs. Brigham Young (SDSU was 2-4 vs. UNLV, while BYU was 1-5 vs. UNLV).

As a result, SDSU will begin tourney play on Wednesday (May 21) against number-five seed Utah at 3:00 p.m. (MDT).

UNLV, the top seed by virtue of winning the regular-season title, will open the tournament against number-six Air Force at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday. The third-seeded Cougars will take on number-four New Mexico in the opening day nightcap at 7:00 p.m.

In the four years of the Mountain West Conference's existence, San Diego State has never finished lower than second place in the final standings and has appeared in the tournament championship game each of the previous three seasons.

The Aztecs' first game of the tourney can be heard live on the Internet on Wednesday with Alan Horton's pregame show beginning at 2:50 p.m. (MDT). If SDSU wins its first contest, it will play the winner of the BYU-New Mexico game at 7:00 p.m. (MDT) Thursday night. An Aztec loss would put them in the 11:00 a.m. contest on Thursday against the loser of the UNLV-Air Force game.

Second-round MWC Championship games on Thursday, May 22 will be televised by College Sports Television (CSTV), with the 11 a.m. (MDT) contest on tape delay and the 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. (MDT) games airing live. A recap of that day's 11 a.m. game, with highlights, will air on CSTV from 2:30-3 p.m. (MDT). CSTV is currently available to a national audience via DirecTV on channel 610.

In addition to television coverage, Creative Sports Radio Network will broadcast the championship on May 24 to 21 markets nationwide. The MWC website (www.TheMWC.com) will also provide livestats to all MWC Tournament games.

The winner of the 2003 MWC Championship will earn an automatic bid to the 2003 NCAA Tournament. The NCAA Baseball Tournament Selection Show is scheduled for Monday, May 26 at 11:30 a.m. (CDT) on ESPN2.
