Billings Named Mountain West Conference Pitcher Of The Week

May 15, 2006

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State right-hander Bruce Billings has been named Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Week. This is the first weekly award for Billings this season as he becomes the third SDSU hurler (along with Justin Masterson and Mike Koons) to win the league honor in 2006.

Billings, a San Diego, Calif., native (Morse HS), improved to 6-3 on the season with his win over Brigham Young last weekend. In 7.0 innings on the mound, he gave up no runs, while striking out six batters and scattering seven hits.

Billings held BYU, which was hitting .334 in conference play coming into the contest, to a .269 batting average and stranded 10 Cougar base runners with only one reaching third base. Over his last three starts (14.2 innings pitched), Billings has not allowed a runner to cross the plate.

In conference play, his record now stands at 6-1 with a 2.11 earned run average.

San Diego State concludes its 2006 regular season on Tuesday (May 16) when it hosts 2nd-ranked Cal State Fullerton at 6:00 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
