Bailey Named SLC Defensive Player of the Week For Second Time

Nov. 6, 2007

FRISCO, Texas - Sophomore Ashley Bailey has been named the Southland Conference's Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season the conference office announced on Tuesday.

Bailey also earned the honor Oct. 23 and joins senior libero Jami Hill has the only Ladyjacks this season that have been named player of the week multiple times. Overall, SFA has taken either offensive or defensive player of the week seven times this year, which is one more than Lamar for the most in the SLC in 2007.

Bailey averaged 2.50 blocks per game in the Ladyjacks sweeps of UT-San Antonio and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi over the weekend. Her efforts at the net helped SFA hold its pair of opponents to a .074 attack percentage in the two matches.

Against UT-San Antonio on Thursday Bailey was on her game, assisting on six blocks on the evening and helping hold the Roadrunners to a .044 hitting percentage in the win.

On Saturday she was even better, tallying a career-high nine blocks, including a pair of solo blocks, in SFA's second sweep of the Islanders this season. The total is the second highest mark that anyone in the SLC has put up this year in a three-game match. SFA would out block TAMUCC by a count of 15 - 5.5 for the afternoon.

With the wins SFA remains in control of its own destiny for at least a share of its fourth consecutive SLC title and will wrap up the regular season with a pair of matches this week at Johnson Coliseum. UT-Arlington will be in town Wednesday before Texas State makes its way to Nacogdoches on Saturday to close things out.

The SLC Tournament is set to begin Friday, Nov. 16, from the Convocation Center in San Antonio, Texas.
