Nov. 16, 2002

Box Score

HAMMOND, La. - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack volleyball team wrapped up the 2002 season and claimed the Southland Conference's No. 3 seed in the league tournament Saturday night with its victory over Southeastern Louisiana. SFA beat the Lady Lions, 3-1 (30-28, 26-30, 30-27, 30-26). The Ladyjacks finish the season with a 21-11 overall record and a 14-6 SLC mark.

The Ladyjacks won a close game one, 30-28, behind senior Angie Wood's (Houston, Texas) 21 kills and 12 digs. It is the third time in the last seven matches that Wood has reached the 20-kill mark. But Southeastern Louisiana bounced right back to tie the match at 1, behind Denise Kubena's 15 kills and 21 digs in game two.

The Ladyjacks came right back out in game three and stole the momentum away from the Lady Lions. Sophomore Brittany Burton (Livingston, Texas) led the charge with her 15 kills and three blocks. SFA finished off the Lady Lions in the fourth game with a 30-26 victory. Senior Jennifer Wilson (Friendswood, Texas) added 10 kills and seven blocks, while sophomore Joanna Benestante (Houston, Texas) concluded the match with 10 kills and 17 digs.

Senior setter Sunni Williams (Houston, Texas) finished with another double-double, recording 52 assists and 19 digs. Junior Julie Goodson (Alvin, Texas) led the Ladyjacks with her 25 digs.

The third-seeded Ladyjacks will face these same Southeastern Louisiana Lady Lions Friday night in the first round of the Southland Conference Championships. The match is slated to begin at 7 p.m., from the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
