Oklahoma Defeats SFA

Dec. 13, 2003

Final Stats

NACOGDOCHES - Sophomore Britany Vinson drained a season-high 18 points on 4-of-7 (.571) shooting from three-point range, but it wasn't enough as SFA lost to No. 17 (ESPN/USA Today poll) Oklahoma, 79-52, Saturday afternoon. The Ladyjacks fall to 0-7 on the season.

The Ladyjacks hung tough with Oklahoma in the first half trailing by only five, 24-19, with 6:47 remaining in the first half. The Sooners then went on a 13-4 run, sparked by Maria Villarroel's 16 first-half points, to take a 37-23 lead. The Sooners went into the intermission with a 42-28 lead after Dionnah Jackson hit a layup at the buzzer to give OU a 14-point advantage.

After two consecutive turnovers to start the second half, Oklahoma increased its advantage to 49-31 before the Ladyjacks rallied to cut the lead to 12. SFA outscored the Sooners, 9-3, over the next 4:34 of the game to cut the Sooners advantage to 54-42. Sophomore Kirby Killingsworth led the Ladyjacks' rally scoring all of her 10 points in the second half. But the Sooner offense was too much down the stretch as they shot their season average Saturday, going 32-of-63 (.508). Villarroel led the Sooners with 24 points on 10-of-12 (.833) shooting.

Sophomore LaToya Mills added eight points and pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds. Junior Zedralyn Butler added eight points and five rebounds.

The Ladyjacks hung tough on the boards being outrebounded by only one, 39-38.

The Ladyjacks return to action Sunday Dec. 21st, when they travel to Jonesboro, Ark., to take on Arkansas State. The game is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
