March 7, 2003

Box Score

NACOGDOCHES - Freshman Britany Vinson (Prattville, Ala.) scored a career-high 27 points as the Ladyjacks knocked off Northwestern State, 80-73, Friday night at the William R. Johnson Coliseum. The victory gives SFA a 15-12 (.556) overall record and a 15-5 (.750) league mark and more importantly SFA will be the No.-2 seed in the Southland Conference tournament.

SFA turned the tables on Northwestern State, as the Ladyjacks jumped out to the big lead opening the game on a 15-3 run. The Ladyjacks sustained the offensive explosion throughout the first-half, going 19-of-43 (.442) from the floor, including a 7-of-14 (.500) effort from beyond the arc. The Ladyjacks went into halftime leading, 45-35.

The Ladyjacks came out in the second half and increased its lead to 15 points, 54-39, behind senior Nathesia Wright's (Arlington, Texas) 14 points and seven rebounds. Northwestern State battled back to cut the lead to four points, 77-73, with 1:42 remaining behind Angela Davidson's 18 points. But the Ladyjacks would not surrender the lead, rolling to their second-consecutive win.

It wasn't just the SFA offense that got the job done against the Lady Demons. SFA forced Northwestern State into 18 turnovers and outrebounded the visitors, 44-40.

Senior Amy Collins (San Antonio, Texas) finished her final regular-season game with an 11-point, nine-rebound and three-block effort. Classmate Yolanda Grant (Flatonia, Texas) finished with two points and an assist. Freshman Kirby Killingsworth (Longview, Texas) and Kendria Smith (Shreveport, La.) each finished with 11.

The Ladyjacks will return to action Thursday in the semifinals of the Southland Conference Tournament. SFA will face the highest-remaining seed from the first round of competition. The game is slated to tipoff at 7 p.m.
