SFA Football Holds Second Scrimmage

March 3, 2006

NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team continued its spring practice schedule Friday night with a 100-play scrimmage at Homer Bryce Stadium. Highlights from the action included a strong effort by the first-team defense and a few big strikes from the passing game.

The first-team defense went the entire scrimmage without allowing a touchdown. Individual highlights included and interception by defensive back Jonathon Botley and three sacks by linebacker Robert Castillo. Linebacker Chris Bocard also recorded a sack. Defensive back Kris Williams was praised by the coaches for his coverage, and defensive lineman Ryan Mengo provided disruptive pressure as a pass rusher.

On the offensive side of the ball, wide receivers Tanner Holcomb and Aaron Rhea both caught long touchdown passes from Clint Bricker, who shared snaps at quarterback with Danny Southall. Tight end Michael Benson posted a 40-yard reception. Running back Michael Motte recorded two catches for around 50 yards, and Jerome Brooks, Louie Runnels, Lester Simmons and Vincent Pervis all turned in solid performances on the ground.

The Lumberjacks will return to practice Monday at 3:30 p.m. Their next scheduled scrimmage is the annual Spring Game, set for Saturday, March 25, at Homer Bryce Stadium.
