SFA Athletes Win Three More Titles
The Stephen F. Austin men and women's track and field team finished off the second day of competition at the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships Sunday in San Marcos. SFA won three individual titles and earned five All-Southland Conference honors Sunday. The Ladyjacks enter the final day of competition leading the team standings with 61.5 points. The Lumberjacks are currently fourth with 34 points.
Senior Tracy Schupp won the SLC individual title in the heptathlon scoring an NCAA provisional mark of 5,068 points. Schupp had a strong day in the javelin finishing second with her throw of 115-04. Schupp finished just ahead of teammate Lindsey Bryson who finished third in the javelin with a throw of 111-08. Bryson also finished second in the 800 meters with her time of 2:20.97. Bryson finished fourth overall in the heptathlon scoring 4,674 points. Freshman Crystal Chang also had a strong second day winning the 800 meters with a time of 2:19.95. She finished ninth overall in the heptathlon scoring 4,520 points. The Ladyjacks also had a strong day from their throwers, as junior Blake Gordon won the shot put with her throw of 49-7.25. Senior Destine Rawls earned All-Southland honors with her throw of 47-7.75. Rawls finished third overall in the shot put. Sophomore Shametra Boykins just missed all-conference honors with her fourth place finish in the long jump, setting an SFA record with her mark of 19-11.75. Boykins finished just ahead of senior Jessica Claiborne who recorded a mark of 19-9.00. Sophomore Jocelyn Stevens scored points for the Ladyjacks in the high jump, clearing a height of 5-7.00. Stevens finished fifth overall. For the Lumberjacks, junior Mike Thompson paced the field in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase, bringing home the individual title with his time of 9:05.62. Classmate Nathan Flores finished fifth in the event crossing the line with a time of 9:24.73. Junior Justin Connell earned all-conference honors with an SLC runner-up finish in the decathlon. He took third in both the 110-meter hurdles (15.04) and the pole vault (14-5.25). Freshman Kenneth McKinley scored points for the Lumberjacks in the shot put with his eighth-place finish. McKinley recorded a toss of 49-9.25. SFA returns to action for the final day of competition at the SLC Championships with the women's javelin finals. The running events are slated to being at 4 p.m., with the 4X100-meter relay. -SFA- |
