SFA Track & Field Prepares for NCAA Regionals

NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin men and women's track and field team has 10 athletes qualified to compete in the NCAA Regional meet Friday May 30th, through Saturday May 31st in Lincoln, Neb.

For the Lumberjacks, Alex Beckworth has qualified in the 110-meter hurdles (14.35) and the long jump (24-1.00). Both juniors Nathan Flores (9:05.79) and Mike Thompson (9:04.17) have qualified in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

On the women's side, sophomore Shametra Boykins has qualified in the triple jump (41-8.00), while senior Jessica Claiborne has qualified in the long (19-8.00) and triple jump (41-2.25). Freshmen Sarah Emerson (149-1.00) and Kasie Query (158-4.00) both qualified in the javelin, while Query also qualified in the pole vault (12-6.00). Throwers Destine Rawls and Blake Gordon each qualified in discus and the shot put. Rawls has recorded a season-best throw of 151-8 in the discus and 48-0.75 in the shot put. Gordon qualified for the regional meet in the discus with her throw of 158-4.00 and 48-5.25 in the shot put. Sophomore Jocelyn Stevens qualified for the 400-meter hurdles with her time of 1:00.26.

Query's mark of 158-4.00 in the javelin throw currently places her 18th in the country.

SFA will continue the 2003 season Saturday May 17th, at the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships in San Marcos, Texas. The championship meet is slated to begin at 11 a.m., with the men's 100-meter dash.
