NACOGDOCHES - Former Stephen F. Austin athletics training student Clint Staub has been deployed to the Middle East as part of Operation Iraqi Surge. Staub, a first lieutenant with the United States Army, was a student at SFA from August, 2001 through May, 2005. During that time, he served as an athletics student trainer with men's basketball, football and track and field.

"During his tenure at SFA, Clint was one of our strongest athletic training students," said head athletics trainer Sandy Miller. "He was always very career oriented toward the military and felt like it was his place to be. And he definitely had strong support from his family."

Staub, a native of Commerce, Texas, was a member of the Army ROTC while a student at SFA. He began his active duty upon graduation and was stationed in Ft. Riley, Kan. After two years, he was deployed to Iraq on Feb. 4. He will be in charge of an eight man Fire Support Team that is responsible for planning and executing any and all fire support assets in support of the infantry company to which he is attached.

"Clint is a guy that would bend over backwards to help you out," said graduate athletics trainer Nick Clark. "But he would also be first in line to help out with a practical joke."

Staub will be overseas for a year to a year and a half. When he returns to the States, he plans to pursue a master's degree in athletics training at Texas Tech.
