Strong Showing in Season Opener

Jan. 20, 2007

NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin men and women's track and field team wrapped up a strong showing in its 2007 debut at the Razorback Invitational. SFA finished the weekend with a school record performance, an individual title, seven top-five finishes and a host of other athletes that recorded top-10 marks.

Junior Darwin Johnson and senior Markeisha Edwards got SFA out to a quick start with their performances in the weight throw Friday afternoon. Johnson won his event with a throw of 58-10.75, while Edwards finished second and set a school record with her toss of 55-8.50.

SFA also saw a lot of solid performances from its freshmen class on Friday, and thrower Kaitlyn Andrews continued that theme Saturday afternoon. The Ontario, Canada native posted a throw of 46-9.50 in the shot put to finish seventh overall. Junior Laura Mikeska led the Ladyjack pole vaulters. She recorded a seventh-place finish after clearing a height of 11-6.50 in the event. Senior LaKoa McKeever followed suit with a strong outing in the mile run. McKeever crossed the finish line with a time of 5:11.27 to finish eighth overall.

In an event that finished late Friday, senior Ryder Peacock recorded a top-five showing the men's high jump. Peacock cleared a height of 6-7.00 to finish fifth overall. Teammate Sumbo Adeniran finished just outside the top five in the long jump. Adeniran recorded a mark of 23-2.75, to finish sixth overall.

SFA returns to action Thursday when they travel to Baton Rouge, La., to compete in the Bayou Bengal Invitational.
