Junior middle blocker Teresa Russell and senior outside hitter Amanda Willnerd were named to the 2001 All-West Coast Conference Honorable Mention squad as announced by the league office today. Russell makes the squad for the second time in her career, the first coming after her strong freshman campaign in 1999, while Willnerd earned the nod for the first time in her standout career on the Hilltop.
Russell, on the injured list since tearing ligaments in her knee at #18 Santa Clara on Oct. 20, still finished the season leading the team in kills (3.7), hitting percentage (.263), digs (3.38) and blocks (1.1) per game and rated among league leaders in three categories in overall matches. Despite missing nine matches due to her injury, Russell still ranked third on the team in total kills (195), just 60 kills shy of the team lead, held by Willnerd.
Willnerd ended her standout career on the Hilltop with a flourish with her most consistent and productive season in earning her firs all-league selection. Willnerd averaged 3.0 kills, while hitting at a .233 pace and added 3.1 digs per game and ranked among league leaders in all three categories during the 2001 campaign. Willnerd, who became the first USF player in three years to surpass 700 kills and digs in a career, also surpassed the 1,000 dig mark this season, becoming only the second person in program history to eclipse the mark.
