(Los Angeles) - USF volleyball went to Los Angles to face Loyola Marymount in search of their first win at Gersten Pavilion since the 1988 campaign when the Dons swept the West Coast Conference season series. San Francisco will have to wait no longer as they escaped from LA with a 24-30, 30-28, 30-22, 21-30, 15-13 victory. With the win, USF (8-7, 3-3 WCC) snaps a 12-match losing skid to the Lions (8-7, 2-3), dating back to 1994. Sophomore setter April Scoggin did a tremendous job running the USF offense in this one, turning in the first triple-double performance of her career with a career-high 10 kill, 56 assist, 15 dig performance. In addition, Scoggin hit at a .409 clip with just one attack error and distributed well as three players tallied 10 or more kills. Junior middle blocker Teresa Russell powered down a team-high 19 kills to go along with 14 digs and six blocks, rebounding nicely after being limited to just five kills in a straight set loss at Pepperdine on Friday. Senior outside hitter Amanda Willnerd recorded 16 kills on .371 hitting and added 13 digs for the Dons, while sophomore outside hitter added 11 kills and nine digs. After being held to just 26 kills 24 hours earlier against the #14 Waves, USF's offense fired on all cylinders against the Lions. The Dons held a .274 - .225 advantage for the match, including convincing .308 - .123 in game two and a dominating .425 - .178 in the third frame. USF pounded 20 kills in 40 attempts and committed just three errors as a team in game three. USF also put up a big block against LMU as five players recorded at least three blocks in the match, led by Russell's six, while senior middle blocker Nikki Stover added five and senior outside hitter Kathrin Kroenig added four. Sophomore outside hitter Caroline Skacel keyed a strong USF defensive effort with a team and career-high 21 digs, leading five San Francisco players in double-digits. Junior defensive specialist Francesca Pomilia continued her solid play with 10 digs. Following a three-game loss against #16 Santa Clara on Friday Loyola Marymount suffered only the second Bay Area weekend sweep against the Broncos and Dons in program history. San Francisco returns to action when they play the Broncos Saturday, Oct. 20 in a WCC Bay Area showdown. Match time is at 7:00 PM at the Leavey Events Center on the Santa Clara campus. |
