Oct. 9, 2004 (Portland, OR) - San Francisco broke through for their first West Coast Conference victory of the season with a 30-28, 30-20, 30-26 sweep against Portland Friday night in the Chiles Center. USF (8-11, 1-2 WCC) took it to the Pilots (9-6, 0-3 WCC) from the start and trailed only once in the contest in game three. San Francisco got big nights from many sources. Senior outside hitter Stephanie Voelckers led the way with a match-high 16 kills on .364 hitting to go along with a match-high 16 digs. Junior middle blocker KeLicia Shorts enjoyed another monster night with 12 kills on .455 hitting and added seven blocks (two solo). Sophomore outside hitter Theresa Hart also performed well, turning in her eighth double-double of the season finishing with 15 kills and 10 digs.
Sophomore setter Jamie Kartchner did a nice job running the USF attack, dishing out 46 assists and added 10 digs for the Dons who hit at an impressive .299 clip for the match. San Francisco held a huge 10-5 block advantage against the Pilots. Senior middle blocker Ashley Bello recorded seven kills and had pair of blocks, while freshman libero Brynn Maurer tallied 13 digs and added a pair of aces. USF took control of the first game with a dominating performance from the Dons middle blockers. Shorts led the way with six kills and two blocks, while senior middle Ashley Bello added five kills and a pair of blocks for San Francisco. Trailing 25-18, the Pilots fought back but Shorts slammed the door with a kill to end it. San Francisco jumped out to a 6-0 lead and never looked back in game two. Theresa Hart pounded 10 kills and was unstoppable for the Dons as they built a 29-18 lead. Voelckers added six kills in the game and squashed any thought of another late Portland rally. USF built a 18-13 lead in game three, but the Pilots stormed back to take their first lead of the entire match at 22-21. The Dons responded, taking advantage of a Portland serving error, a block by Shorts and freshman outside hitter Kristin Hasselberg followed by a kill from Theresa Hart gave USF a 24-23 lead. The Dons would not look back, completing the sweep for their first league win of the season. San Francisco returns to action when they travel to Spokane to take on Gonzaga in WCC play Saturday.
