USF Women Enter the Final Weekend of the Season

Nov. 1, 2004

The Week Ahead - USF (9-7-3, 2-4-0 WCC) will host Gonzaga (11-8-0, 3-3-0 WCC) in the final regular season match for both teams. The game will be played at Negoesco Stadium in San Francisco with a start time of 1 pm.

This match for USF takes on extra importance as a playoff berth could be at stake. The Dons have yet to make the post season in their 18-year history.

In the West Coast Conference - After falling to #6 Portland on the weekend, USF sits in sixth place in the WCC, one point behind LMU and three points behind Gonzaga. A win this weekend over Gonzaga could potentially put San Francisco in fourth place in the West Coast Conference (WCC), but a loss could drop USF to seventh place in the WCC.

In other WCC women's soccer action this weekend, LMU travels to San Diego to face the #23 Toreros, Portland will face Saint Mary's in Moraga, while Pepperdine will face #5 Santa Clara in Santa Clara.

The Week that Was - The Dons played two games this past week, winning one and losing the other. On Tuesday, October 25, USF defeated Hawaii by a 1-0 score. Stephanie Gray scored the lone goal for the Dons, and Stephanie Beall collected her sixth shut out of the season.

On Saturday, October 30, USF traveled to Portland to face the #6 ranked Pilots. Two first half goals by the Pilots was sufficient as they defeated the San Francisco Dons 2-0. Scoring for the Pilots was Christine Sinclair an Lisa Sari.

Player Notes:

Departing Seniors - This weekends game against Gonzaga marks the end of some great USF careers for six of our seniors. Goalkeeper Stephanie Beall, defenders Laura Ott, Alana Heally, Alexis Moren and Mackenze Kerr, along with midfielder Annika Schmidt will be playing their final game at USF. Heally and Kramer are both fifth year seniors, while Schmidt transfered to USF in her junior year.

Chelsea Hunt - After 19 games Chelsea has scored seven goals, which is good enough for a first place tie in goals scored with teammate Shuree Hyatt. Her 17 points on the season also puts her in first place tie for team scoring. Furthermore, Chelsea is in sixth place amongst WCC scoring leaders.

This season Chelsea has recorded four game winning goals, which gives her six game winners through her two-year USF career. Hunt is now tied for third in USF history in that category. Hunt is two game winning goals away from second place all-time in USF women's soccer history.

Shuree Hyatt - Is currently in a first place tie with Chelsea Hunt in team scoring with 17 points (7G, 3A). Hyatt recorded her first collegiate hatrick in a game against UC Davis on October 10.

Amongst the WCC leaders, Shuree's seven goals places her in fourth spot in the WCC, while her 17 total points is good enough for sixth place in the individual scoring category in the WCC.

In regards to the USF record books, Shuree's 15 goals scored in her two years at San Francisco, places her eighth spot all-time amongst USF goal scorers, one goal away from the seventh spot in that list. Furthermore, Shuree is now one game winning goal away from entering 3rd place in that category.

Annika Schmdit - Through 18 games this season, Annika has scored five goals and two assists for a total of 12 points. Schmidt, in the midst of her second season at San Francisco has a career total of eight goals and 10 assists in 30 games played. Furthermore, Annika has 10 assists for her career, which represents the sixth best in school history. Annika will need four more assists to move into the top five assists leaders in school history.

Stephanie Beall - Stephanie has six shutouts this season, which places her in a fourth place tie for most shutouts in the WCC. Furthermore, Beall has 13 shutouts in her USF career, one short of tying Amy Voiland (1994-1998) for the USF lead in goalkeeper solo shutouts. Beall's record this season is 9-7-3, 2-4-0 WCC)

From the Coaches Corner:

Coaching with Experience - Pamela Kalinoski is in her fourth season as head coach at the University of San Francisco after two years apprenticing for the role in the assistant head coach position. Kalinoski enjoyed a tremendous playing career at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, competing on a Tar Heel's team that won four consecutive NCAA women's soccer titles without losing a single match. Advising Pam will be fourth-year assistant coach Allison Gibson, who graduated in 1995 from Sonoma State and third-year goalkeeper coach Jason Werner who graduated from USF in 1996

Coaching Milestone - Over her four years as head coach at USF, Pamela Kalinoski has compiled an overall record of 31-41-5, which is good enough for second place in total wins for USF women's soccer coaches. The coaching leader in victories at USF for women's soccer is Jean Paul Verhees who compiled an impressive 89-95-12 record in his 10 years at the helm of the USF women's soccer program.
